Is anyone else here a fan of this amazing series of books written in the 60s and 70s by Susan Cooper? A series of books steeped in British culture, Celtic mythology and Arthurian legend.
About 2 years ago I'd read that Walden media were making a film of The Dark is Rising and was very very excited. Today I read that it is to be released in Australia in early October and that there is a trailer viewable on the net and was very very excited.
I saw the trailer and was very very dismayed. They've taken the story and Americanized it. I'm sorry if any Americans in here may take offence but I can't believe that this movie has been set in the US.
Still, it may be a good movie and remain true to the spirit of the book. I don't know why the HP movies and Narnia all "remained" in the Uk but The Dark is Rising is transferred to the US. OK, it's not as well known but those who know and love the books can be quite fanatical about them.

The title alone has me interested but didn't read the books. I think often making a film from literature can be dodgy especially if the books were part of your formative years.
I was so cynical about Tolkien being serialised for instance, but Jackson did it justice, when i finally got round to biting the bullet.
I remember reading The Owl Service years ago, and they tv serialised that, and it was brilliant, so I remember, however I would be unsure now if it would be good. Some of these books are wrapped up in your childhood memories and don't translate to adulthood.
As for Arthurian legend I spent some some in Cornwall in Tintangel when I was around 14 and 15, and it was fabulous to take in that energy and myth. Cornwall is' dark' place.

I saw the trailer the other week......
In regards to this:
I know exactly what you mean. It's a British story and yet it's been Americanised.
I'm so glad that the people behind the Harry Potter films have remained so strong in keeping it "UK Only", so to speak. Hell - it's a British story - based in the UK - all the characters are from the UK. It's only natural that it remain as such.
Aah well.
I haven't read the books of this series but it does seem interesting.
