Has anyone been lucky enough to see this program yet? I am waiting for it to come to a Movie Theatre close by, or on to Video. I watched all the others ie 7up 14 up and so on.
I found them fascinating and can't wait to see whats become of them all at 49up!

I love this series but haven't had a chance to watch 49up. It really is the ultimate reality series. SBS have shown all the others at some stage so it should come out on TV one day. I'm waiting for the DVD.

Wasn't it sad when that poor fellow became a recluse, then in the next series he was doing some thing for his local council, I think?
Then there's the little cockney bloke who turned out to be quite a little celebrity locally , he'd done so much better than even he could ever have predicted (financially)!

Interesting stuff; "give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man". I had to write a paper on it and the idea of "cradle to grave" for sociology. Anyone interested in the theory behind the show should check out Pierre Bourdieu and his ideas about cultural and social capital.
Very interesting to think that at the age of seven, your path in life is essentially set.

Some of the people in 7 up didn't actually turn out the way expected, in lifestyle I mean. I think we also do change alot as we age,I think we learn to put things of importance into the proper persepective and perhaps not make a fuss or worry about the things that waste our time and energy. Perhaps because we realise we've wasted enough time and emotion on silly things as younger beings?

The degree of upward or downward class movement has been negligible. All the public school boys went to Oxbridge universities and became lawyers etc. Even the little girl who dropped out of school and seemed to be going down quite a destructive path stayed upper class by marrying a lawyer. Different social classes generally have differing aspirations and expectations. At seven, the public school boys when asked about the future said they would be going to university. When the working class kids were asked, one girl said she wanted to be a checkout girl at the supermarket.

Don't you think Australia is more even as far as opportunities for our children are concerned, I mean anyone can go to University these days, as long as they try hard at school? People from under privileged backgrounds can actually go to Uni and become teachers and doctors if they aspire to!
