Anyone watching the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend? I've heard the German entry - I quite like it. It was an indie/country feel to it. And the singer is Australian. The English entry has a chance this year which is different to previous years - it's a rap with children's voices backing the male singer.

Semi-finals on Thursday. I think SBS might be broadcasting them - but don't quote me.

I've just watched all the finalists. Here are my impressions while the memory is still fresh:
Terry Wogan was in fine form, as usual!
Latvia was a boy band singing a capella. I was very impressed by their musicianship but didn't think much of the song.
I liked Germany - I liked the idea of a band form germany with an Australian singer singing country music. I did like the song as well.
Norway will probably score well. Both Macedonia and Croatia had that heavy dance ethnic fell to it that has been a winner for the last two years. Ukraine was similar.
Finland were fantastic - I just love the idea of a heavy metal band in Eurovision but they were quite run-of-the-mill heavy metal. I loved it when his wings "unfurled"
Lithuania were brilliant! LOL! "We are the winners of Eurovision" They appealed to my sense of humour.
England were good. I liked the rap and the schoolgirl chorus.
Spain was so awful that they were brilliant!!!!! Acts like this is one of the reasons why I still watch Eurovision every year!
ANd LOL! Moldova - the singer seemed to be wearing less and less clothing each time we saw her.
OMG, Russia. That was an awful mullet on the male isnger and what was with the ballet dancers? Especially the one that came halfway out of the piano?
Ireland was OK - a ballad sung well by a male singer.
I quite liked Bosnia and Hercegovena as well.
The one song that I really really liked was the French entry. That was very poignant and was the only one that felt emotional. In fact it's been a while since a Eurovision song has moved me in anyway.
I don't know if I'll be able to stay up for the result but I do love watching the voting.
So my faves: 5. Lithuania
4. Bosnia and Hercegovena
3. England
2. Germany
1. France
Special mention
Spain,Norway,Finland,Russia

Oh well, France came third last! LOL!
It was well worth staying up to watch Lordi holding a lovely big bunch of flowers.

In the paper today, German newpapers are asking why no one likes them. (Germany came last) Apparently only Norwegians gave them any votes.

I read an opinion on the Guardian website that perhaps Germany and England didn't get as many votes as predicted is because both styles ( country and rap) are associated with America. Israel's entry was very gospel-orientated and didn't score very highly either - mind you I thought it was a boring song. Eurovision is a lot about politics as well as a song contest. I found it interesting that Germany gave it's score of 12 points to Turkey - and that could very well be because of the high number of Turkish migrant workers in that country.
And Malta came last - Germany came 13th or 19th out of 24 countries.

Some of the most famous Eurovision songs never won the contest
Nel Blu di Pinto di Blu (Volare) finished third, Eres Tu came second etc.
