Sounds folk to me! I like the Appalachian sound - like Gillian Welch. I've heard of that sound being described as alt-folk (as in alternative folk) and Niko Case as being alt-country. Its sometimes nice to go back to the source and enjoy what artists like Gillian enjoy. You should get the soundtrack to Oh Brother WHere Art Though, good start. Neko does more than that, she also does alt-rock and pop stuff with The Sadies and the New Pornographers. She is my alternative wife as well! ;D

I've already got the soundtrack to Oh Brother Where Art Thou! ;D Loved the movie, bought the soundtrack, fell in love with the music which I was partial too anyway.
The soundtrack to Songcatcher is meant to be Appalachian but I haven't got that one.
A Sixties folk duo who sang that sort of music were Ian and Sylvia. They're a bit hit and miss because some of it is a bit saccharine but there's some gems among their stuff. Four Strong Winds is a good album but there's a very woosy version of Royal Canal/The Auld Triangle on it which I absolutely hate (give me The Pogues version any time) and there's a version of Poor Lazarus on it that pales in comparison to the one on the soundtrack of Oh Brother Where Art Thou ( but I still like it).

Del Shannon - Runaway
I think this is my favourite pre-Beatles rock and roll song.
