CHANEL NO. 5
As Chanel rightly pointed out last night, after receiving the news from James and Andrew that her Australian Idol journey was at an end, her status as the fifth placed contestant on the show, in a delicious coincidence, aligned her with her perfume namesake.
Like Chanel No. 5, Chanel Cole is unique, classic, timeless and classy.
Chanel had the aura of a star-in-waiting from the moment she stepped in front of the judges, with Dicko immediately smitten by her arresting audition. Chanel's performance saw Dicko leap to his feet applauding, and he pre-empted Marcia and Mark by saying, "I don't care about you two, I'm saying yes."
Chanel's path through the Seymour Centre, the semi-finals and into the finals was smooth sailing all the way, with nary a storm cloud in sight. At the Seymour Centre, after her group performance, Dicko spared Chanel the 'firing squad' line-up and sent her straight through to the next stage, telling her, "You are in a different league to everyone else."
The finals series has been a little stormier for Chanel, with some days of clear, blue skies and calm, crystalline waters, and others throwing up waves the size of ten story buildings against an angry backdrop of thunder and lightning.
Whenever the judges rained on her parade, Chanel maintained her belief in herself, and always received their feedback with characteristic grace.
This grace was never more evident than last night, when an appreciative Chanel cheerfully accepted the end of her time in the competition, and showed us one more time why she had travelled so far along the Australian Idol road. Chanel's final performance was a showstopper, as she strutted through the adoring studio audience, displaying her trademark sass and verve.
Like Chanel No. 5, we can expect Chanel to be a part of the public's consciousness for many years to come.
We spoke to Chanel this morning, in between a round of hectic media engagements, as she reflected on her life-changing months in Australian Idol.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
How are you feeling now after finding out you are out of the competition?
I feel absolutely fine. I'm really excited about what's going to happen next.
If you had your time over would you have done anything differently?
No, I wouldn't have done anything differently at all, not a darn thing!
What have you learnt from being in the competition?
During the competition I've learnt to take it on the chin, and I've also learnt to be bold.
What are your fondest memories of your time in Australian Idol?
I have so many great memories, too many to choose from in fact, but they all involve the other contestants.
What will you miss the most about your Australian Idol experience?
Sam, my surrogate mother, Aunty Paul Riggio (talent co-ordinator), as we called him, the other wonderful contestants, and Al and Kyle (production runners) who drove us everywhere.
What are your plans for the future? Will you still pursue a musical career?
Absolutely.
For the next series of Australian Idol, what advice would you give to contestants based on your own experience?
You are damned if you do, and damned if you don't, so do it your way. And don't forget to have fun!
