Hello all of you beautiful people,
My experience of the Melbourne Australian Idol auditions is indeed unique. Enough chatter & I'm going to get onto the story.
Audition day One:
It was a freezing, wet morning which fell on Saturday May 1st 2004. I arrived at 3.30am where I was stunned to observe the 1000 people already being soaked in the (typical) Melbourne rain. Considering that I had auditioned in 2003, it would be percieved that I would be more prepared for Melbourne to keep up it's reputation of unpredictable weather. Once the 1000 people ahead of me had packed up their tents & matresses I eventually found myself in the second lane of auditionees (as opposed to being at the back of the 3rd lane).
I entered the Melbourne Park Function Centre at 10.10am. The waiting game while inside the big waiting room was long & daunting when finally my name was called at 2.30pm. I was happy to see that the people with me in the mini waiting room outside the audition rooms were all people who I had socialised with outside. Then again, I socialised with strangers as well.
I walked into the audition room, welcomed by the judges. Two blonde women, one younger than the other. I sung my song, & they seemed to like me because they asked me to sing another song. (Thank goodness I had another one prepared). After I had sung the second song, this is what they said to me:
"Look, it's a really hard decision to make because you definately have something special. I'm going to have to say no to going through to the next round. We just detected a hint of a nasal sound in your voice. You're still young so you still have a long way to go so if you want, please come back & audition next year. Thank you."
As I was about to walk out, one of the women said:
"You look great by the way!"
I walked away extremely disappointed because they what they said didn't make sense because I practiced my songs in front of my dad before hand & my dad has a great ear when it comes to detecting nasal sound & he didn't think that I sounded nasal at all & I believed that my performance of my songs in the audition were the best that I have ever done of those songs. I didn't want to give up so I had the idea of travelling to Adelaide to audition again but on Sunday morning my dad presented me with an article about a girl who was in the same circumstances as me but she was told to come back on Monday. I decided to do the same thing.
Audition day Two:
I arrived at Melbourne Park Function Centre at 12am on Monday morning. There was only 70 or so people & I took that as a good sign. My frame of mind was "3rd time's a charm" and that seemed to be the case during the day. Weather was better than Saturday & I arrived earlier, therefore I walked into the Function Centre at 8.50am with the first group of people allowed in.
I had enough time to make myself presentable & my audition number was called virtually as I arrived back from the bathroom. I went to a different audition room then Saturday's audition. While sitting outside the room I met some lovely people who were nervous so I told them my story & it seemed to comfort them a bit as well as my breathing techniques. Thanks to my experiences as a singing teacher.
I walked into the audition room & I sung a different song than Saturday - again I didn't get through.
I went back into the big waiting room empty handed. After waiting for a few friends to to come out of the audition room I saw the Executive Producer & I spoke to him about my experience. He asked me to sing for him & said to me that he said:
"Wow, this is really hard because I can't go against what the judges have already said to you. You definately have the potential, but the thing is that there have been better singers than you that went through. No offence intented because you are very talented for a 17 year old."
The same Exec producer approached me when I walked back into the waiting & told me to re-register & audition again. I felt happy because he obviously had faith in me to give it another shot. It was 9.30am at this point & they didn't want me to line up & wait again so I was escorted by security to the audition rooms & I went straight into the audition room. This was the same room I auditioned in on Saturday so they judge in there was the same & recognised me immediately & told me to go next door to the different judges. Again, security allowed me to go straight through.
I sung, I felt good but the answer was again, no!
That was my experience, everyone! I'm fine with it because it is evident that it isn't my time & I've come to terms with that now. (After 3 auditions in one weekend you'd think so)
I have to dash off to dinner now but I hope you enjoyed reading my experience.
