On last nights show, I heard James say "gotten". Please, we are not yet part of America and I hope we never will be. Gotten is an 'Americanism'. We Aussies still say 'got'.

"Gotten" is a perfectly respectable word, as is "got".
It's not an American word at all, as far as I know.

I have checked 2 dictionaries regarding the usage of "gotten". Here is the first:
gotten
N. Amer. past participle of GET.
— USAGE The form gotten is not used in British English but is very common in North American English, though even there it is often regarded as non-standard.
The 2nd dictionary gives some examples i.e.
"the painter hadn't quite GOT (note not gotten) his expression" and
"you haven't quite GOT (again not gotten) the tune".
"Gotten" it says is US usage.
The only people that use gotten verbally and in writing are Yanks and Aussies who want to be Yanks and not dinky di.
BTW the title of the programme (note the spelling) is AUSTRALIAN Idol, not AMERICAN Idol.

Multi z's, thank you for your support. Don't get me started with words like "gray", "liter" and "specter". A particular favourite (favorite!!!) of mine is the misuse of "fit" ie The book was so small it "fit" perfectly into my pocket. As we Aussies know, it should be "fitted". Oh yes, and what happened to all the "blokes" in Oz? They have all turned into "guys".

And Babs, I hate the way Americans don't use adverbs correctly.
"It fits perfect"
"He did real well"
"I went really slow"
UUUGGGGGGHHHH!!!!

Four posts, and each more insightful than the previous.
